  State of the State House

For over 30 years, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has made history and led the nation in the struggle for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender civil rights. MGLPC lobbied into law one of America’s very first Gay & Lesbian Civil Rights laws. One of America’s first Hate Crimes laws. And still, America’s toughest HIV confidentiality laws.

Massachusetts again occupies center stage, stemming from our first-in-the nation ballot initiative victory in 2002, MGLPC’s filing of the first marriage bill at the State House – and, of course, GLAD’s Goodridge victory in 2003, which affirmed that same-sex couples have the right to a civil, government-issued marriage license in Massachusetts!

MGLPC leads the Lobbying efforts to preserve the Goodridge decision, fighting off local and national anti-gay forces that seek to ban gay marriage in our state. Constitutional Conventions in 2004, 2005 and 2006 saw repeated attempts to revoke marriage equality. MGLPC, with the strong support of our members and allies, successfully defeated those attempts.

As we continue the struggle to preserve marriage equality, MGLPC also knows it’s time to move on. We will be working on a wide spectrum of LGBT issues in the new 2007 – 2008 Legislature. There’s much to be done to fulfill the potential of the Goodridge decision and to protect our community’s seniors, youth, transgender and those challenged with HIV/AIDS and domestic violence.
